On the Outs

Direct and indirect impact of crack cocaine on the lives of three inner city girls. One makes and deals the drug. Her grandmother blames her brother's Mental Retardation on her mother's heroin use. Another girl almost jumps in front of a train when she realizes it may take years to get her daughter back. Several scenes depict dealing, intoxication, and withdrawal. One scene depicts preparation of crack cocaine for sale.

3D glasses and Coraline

I did not find content worthy of mention related to psychiatry or substance abuse, but after I realized the 3D version was included on the disk from NetFlix I went to Blockbuster where I purchase cardboard framed glasses for $0.15 each. They worked best with red on right, producing a wonderful illusion of depth, but the colors seemed less vivid. I'm not sure these were the right glasses. Others available from Amazon seem to have different colors, or colors reversed left to right. Shame on NetFlix for not helping out. They could at least allow subscribers to purchase glasses from them and certainly let you know when you order the disk which kind of glasses will be appropriate!

Johnny Belinda

A drunken ruffian rapes Belinda, a woman who cannot hear or speak. The physician who attempts to help her explains to her father that she is likely amnesic for the traumatic event, but she does appear to recognize her assailant, and evidences no other sign of PTSD.

Bottle Rocket

An early scene includes a man who appears to represent a psychiatrist giving reluctant permission for an unnecessary contrived "escape" through the window of a psychiatric hospital room that looks like a hotel room.

Nosferatu

Cannibalism of course. A character enters a primitive appearing cell, apparently in an asylum, because of an "attack of acute mania" in which, with a demented grin, he catches and eats flies and expresses envy of spiders.

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle

Two young men smoke marijuana, get high, and spend a night searching for burgers to satisfy the resulting increased appetite. Illustrates dealing and several types of smoking apparatus. One dream sequence features love and marriage involving a human size bag of marijuana personified as a woman. In the end numerous disasters fail to curb their motivation to get high. An early scene includes a brief movie clip about the dangers of the drug including suicide.

Waltz with Bashir

More than 20 years after service with the Israeli army in Lebanon a nightmare flashback with obvious symbolic connection triggers a search to recreate memories of exposure to a massacre. Portrays his avoidance, guilt and sense of isolation from others who have not shared the experience. Reference to a false memory experiment and LSD. Interview with a "post trauma expert." Characters share joints while reminiscing.

Layer Cake

The plot revolves around big time drug dealing with brief plausible scenes involving production, cutting, and packaging of cocaine with references to ecstasy and LSD. Very brief scenes vaguely suggest withdrawal, intoxication and overdose.

Death at a Funeral

While attending a funeral three characters in succession ingest pills thought to be Valium that are in reality a combination of psychedelics, producing what seems to me to be a reasonable facsimile of hallucinogen intoxication. One of them threatens suicide by jumping (naked) from the roof after he sees his fiance kissing another man.

Office Space

Brief but pretty accurately portrayed progressive relaxation and/or hypnosis (There is some ambiguity.) seem to produce positive life changing results (in only one session!) for the protagonist. Another character abandons suicide attempt by CO from car exhaust when his wife finds him in the garage with the motor running.

Youth Without Youth

The protagonist abandons his plan to suicide with poison after recovering from a lightning strike which leaves him with a younger body and with special powers including hypermnesia.
